What should I do about my finger?

My finger was accidently shut in the sliding door of the livestock trailer last night. My dad doesnt think it is broken, and im not sure what to think. It is very painful to write with. I taped it today with athletic tape but it still hurt a lot. Do you know of any methods to help? What I should do? Or if I should have it checked out?
